AI novelists?

What do you mean robots can write as good as people can? This is the question that ran through my brain when I ran across this information. I am a writer of novels. I am a person, a human being, and here is an organization that has invented some artificial intelligence they claim can produce content as good as any human can. Wow.

This is the brainchild of a company called OpenAI. They are backed by Elon Musk, among others. Their artificial intelligence is called GPT2 and they are now wondering if it’s too intelligent to safely release to the public.

Their worry is this: what if this technology can be used by people who want to create dangerous situations for everyone else in the world? OpenAI doesn’t know yet what all their own brainchild can do now. They have to do a lot more experimenting with it before they can feel comfortable letting it out into the world. This new technology can produce plausible news stories and write a fiction novel all by itself, but can it be hacked and made to produce all manner of false information to fool the world into believing something nobody should? Maybe. That’s what OpenAI is wondering and so they are going to keep this on their shelves until they can find out.

You may be wondering how some of this information is now public if they are wanting to keep this secret. That’s the way it goes sometimes when something new that is this large is created. Some of the info gets leaked out, but that’s okay most of the time. OpenAI knew this going in, but they haven’t let all of it out. Most of their information is still under lock and key and will remain there until they can be sure they all the angles worked out. That could take some time and right now they’re not sure how soon they will release all of it. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Wow. Can you just imagine? What will human authors do if they get replaced with AI? I’m not sure I want to find out. Geesh!
